Hey Kevin or Lena or whoever the heck is in charge of the Suggestion box, I just thought you should know that your links page doesn’t display two of the link banner pictures. Figured this was the best place to let you know, instead of the main page.
This should be fixed. Let me know if anyone sees a problem with it.
I am not sure whether this is covered by the ‘better archive system’, but would it be possible to click on a tag, and all comics that have been tagged with that character to come up.
This would be quite useful when looking for comics which feature the villans from comics past.
FIXED!!!!
@Alan – that is absolutely one of the things I am working on. Right now the board is set to only show one post per page. So, when you search by tags, it shows you ONE post with that tag. Completely useless. I need to figure out how to make a template for the archives that will override the main template.
Thank you very much for bringing it up! (:
This bit of CSS applying to the archive page gives a really silly looking cursor under Xorg here:
.car-collapse .car-yearmonth {
cursor: s-resize;
}
It looks … well, it looks like a down arrow hitting a bar. I couldn’t figure out how to take a screenshot that included the mouse pointer, though. You might want to just take that out and maybe stick a little swivel icon there with the http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/REC-CSS2-19980512/generate.html#propdef-list-style-image property?
Hello there,
found this comic recently (via Twitter, if it’s of interest), and enjoy it that much :-)
However, one minor nit, the navigation is only at the top. This means, I’ll have to scroll up the whole page again when reading of comic and blog is finished. This may only affect the occasional new reader like me, but if it’s not too much of a burden it would be heavily appreciated if there’d be navigation buttons below the blog, too.
Re: cursor, question of S.Bronson above me
cursor forms are browser-dependent as far as I can tell. I get a simple arrow downpointing with Opera, which just indicates fine that there is an expanding to be expected downwards. Once expanded I get the default cursor. Seems ok to me.
PS: sorry, my english is a bit grubby
FIXED! There is now navigation on the top of all pages. It will get prettier later – but it’s working!
@not_a_monkey
At the bottom of each entry there is a “Go forward in time” and a “Go back in time” which functions to let you navigate from the bottom of the entries. Did you miss them because they are too small? Or maybe I should rename them to match the top ones? Or are you looking for goblins… OR am I misunderstanding altogether.
Thank you very much for your feedback. I look forward to your response. Thank you for helping make HOLE better!
oopsie, I missed them completely because indeed I was looking for the goblins, not because the text being too small (actually I’m reading with at least120% zoom most of the time) … maybe matching names would have helped to avoid my outing as dumbie ;-)
Speaking of naming, the goblins read ‘first strip’ and ‘latest strip’, but ‘previous post’ and ‘next post’, which is a bit … inconsistent.
So, with your help even I’m able to navigate without scrolling and there’s nothing important to do. But if you want to, you could reconsider the naming to an overall fit.
@not_a_monkey
I just replaced the smaller navigation (with the stupid alternate names – what was I thinking?) with the SAME navigation. I think when I first did it, I didn’t want the navigation to take up so much vertical space, which is why I opted for “goblin-free” navigation. I was being a design nerd. I really needed to be a functionality nerd. I even think Kevin has brought this up to me before and I dismissed him because we are married. LOL.
Anyway, take a look and see if it works for you. Please feel free to give me more feedback. I appreciate it!
Lena
that was pretty fast, thanks a lot :-)
I don’t think vertical space is an issue here, since the comic itself is considerably vertical, unlike, say, a common three-to-four-panels-in-a-row cartoon. Plus, if there’s an additional blog entry, more vertical space is already needed for good. Thus the proportions are not screwed by the additional navigation goblins.
But that’s just my opinion, and I’m for sure not the most graphical guy …
Again, thanks for your effort, I appreciate that a lot.
@ not_a_monkey
Glad it was a quick fix. You are right on target. I just probably decided it was a bad idea because Kevin thought of it (Sorry Kevin). Hopefully, this will really help people out.
Oh, and cool you found the strip via Twitter! I always wonder how people find the comic. (:
I have to say–I thought having the navigation buttons at the top of the page was much more convenient than their new location at the bottom. My work schedule means I often catch up with the Tues-Thurs strips on Friday, so having to scroll all the way down will be a bit of a pain. Not that it will actually stop me…
I’m doing my best to get that previous/next link back up there! Hang in there. It will be the next upgrade I make. Even if it isn’t goblins, we need something!
EDIT: Fixed. Later goblins. But for now, you at least have the navs back. Whew.
Maybe I’m not seeing it, (always a possibility!) but I don’t see ANY navigation now.
Click home. Behold the navigation over each strip.
Update: Now there is previous/next navigation on all comic pages at the top. (:
Thanks Lena!
Hi!
I really enjoy the comic and the sharp comment on the daily grotesque or hilarious situation!
But i need something to help me find my current spot to start reading again after a few days… i don’t visit daily, you see…
When i save your URL-adress, it is either as “current comic” whitch is great for the daily visitor, or as “days-before-current 4″ – and that changes every day! A “tag page”-function or something?
If comics was numbered continously… ?
Dunno the solution, and I seem to manage, but…
Best wishes!
Hi Rasmus!
I just updated the social bookmarking addition. At the bottom of the post you’ll see a share/save button. In there is a bookmark that might help. I have also an even better solution that will let users tag a page, but I’ll have to get some help implementing the code.
And, if you’ll notice, each comic is numbered. Perhaps the combination of those two things will help.
Thanks for your input!
Lena
As discussed in the wrong place earlier, I had problems with the new layout on firefox at 1024×768, but I also have more substantial ones with this layout on a laptop screen at 1280×800 on ubuntu 9.04, with the default firefox installation.
Don’t have Vista on any machines, and the one that runs XP is currently in debian mode doing a stress-test and recompile script that I expect to run through halfway next week, so sorry but no joy for that test.
I will be sending mail with an aim.com address and two screenshots shortly.
Sent, along with further details in the email body to lenaatlenashore.com
NOTE: Email edited by lena so she doesn’t get her email address farmed. (;
Thank you! I got the email. I’ll check it out as soon as I can. Thank you so much for doing this. It is sure to be helpful.
If you’re re-editing messages to lower your email visibility you may want to remove it from the one Kevin posted in the comments for Friday’s comic.
And hey, no problem.
Thank you! I did. Now, I’ll go chastise Kevin.
Just a couple of thoughts:
For what it’s worth, I’d prefer to have the navigation links directly below the comic (and above the text), rather than at the very bottom of the page. I’m on dial-up and so I like to right-click the “next page” link and have it start downloading into a new tab while I read the text and/or comments. Having those links at the very bottom of the page means I have to scroll all the way down before I can click the link. I end up scrolling up instead to the links at the top of the page, which is almost as inconvenient.
I’d also suggest adding “First page” and “Latest page” links to the navigation, so that those who arrive here via a link from another page to a specific cartoon can have a simple place to click to get to the very beginning or end of the series. Many comic sites offer a four-button navigation bar, something like this:
[|<<- First] [<-Previous] [Next ->] [Latest ->>|]
The “first comic” link got lost in the transition. I didn’t even realize it wasn’t there any more. So, good catch. Thanks.
Adding the buttons between the comic and the blog are problematic as they aren’t treated as separate elements. I have considered making a navigation control panel in one of the sidebars that I could place to be even with the comic.
It seems I’m being flagged as a spammer; a post I attempted to make under the post for Wednesday the 7th of October didn’t show up, and the URL adjustment from your posting script had “566-–-warning-shot-•-02″ in it.
Maybe. I just searched back and couldn’t find any flagged comments. We have had people hit the “Cancel” button by mistake when they meant to hit “Submit.” Hell, I’ve done it. In any case, let me know if it happens again and I’ll try to keep my eyes open. (I don’t know what “the URL adjustment from your posting script” means but I’ll ask Lena.)
I wasn’t paying enough attention so I guess it wasn’t an important point, but when you reply to a message it gives you a URL for the page with different code bits added in to it:
http://www.heroesoflesserearth.com/2009/10/567-%E2%80%93-warning-shot-%E2%80%A2-03/comment-page-1/#comment-23093
That URL is what was returned after I posted my statement about the murky, weaksauce disgrace of Shadowrun. That should make sense of my earlier cryptic nonsense that accompanied my whining.
Oh, while I’m whining: The “buy the books” graphic and the “suggestion box” graphic both overwrite the comic image and the text underneath it regularly in my browser view still Lena.
The “URL adjustment” is there so that when clicked it scrolls down the page. It’s like a mini-link on a page. It says “I want to go on this page AND I want to go “X” far down the page.
What browser and OS are you using?
